New Laptop - HP ENVY 17 3D!

I just ordered a new laptop / notebook from HP. It's better than my desktop, which is getting on in years now.
It has a 3D screen and glasses, and can apparently play L4D2 in 3D. Can't wait to try it out with Nicadeamas's Firetower Trail campaign!
The expected build date is August 1st, so I should have it by around the 7th.

Specs:

HP ENVY 17 3D customizable Notebook PC
  • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • 2nd generation Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
  • 1GB GDDR5 Radeon HD 6850M Graphics [HDMI]
  • 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
  • 1.28TB 7200RPM Dual Hard Drive (640GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
  • 17.3" diagonal Full HD HP 3D Ultra BrightView Infinity LED Display (1920x1080)
  • HP 3D Active Shutter Glasses

  • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
  • Backlit Keyboard with numeric keypad

wow....
That sounds pretty massive. I didn't even know they integrated 3d into a laptop, or L4D2 for that matter lol. Just be careful with it I hear there can be medical issues with prolonged exposure to 3d simulation. (Like 4+ hours in a day I think.)
Awesome.
Wish I could see 3d lol.

Yeah, 3d was actually something I didn't really care about, but It wound up being cheaper than the non-3d version somehow, so I figured "why not!" :)

Also, I found out in addition to L4D2, when Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out (Aug 23rd - it went gold today) I'll be able to play that in 3d as well. For a feature I didn't even really want, I'm getting kind of excited about it! :)

Gotta love an HP lappy. I'm on my 6th, counting both work and personal machines. Congrats, Vecima!

Thanks!

I got an email this morning... the Laptop has shipped! My initial thought was "I might even get it this weekend!" but then I looked on the FedEx website, and it's current location is shanghai. :(

Oh well. I should have it by Aug 2nd (one day after the original build date - so almost early)

Re: New Laptop - HP ENVY 17 3D!

Well, the laptop came yesterday. So far I'm liking it. I've had it freeze a few times, so unfortunately if that keeps up I'll be sending it back. We'll see. The sound is great for a laptop. It surprised me. I kind of want to watch a bluray on it now, but I don't own any blu ray movies lol. I tried out L4D2 in 3D. It's sort of a jarring effect, and you have to play around with depth settings and stuff like that otherwise you'll see weird ghost like images and stuff. I'm not sure if it's something I'll do much of, but since the 3d version of the laptop came out cheaper I certainly don't regret it. It came with a few 3d demo videos. The "Kung Fu Panda 2" video looks gorgeous. The 3d is a really good effect, and combined with the nice sound it really blows me away. So there's definitely potential for the 3d to look great. I think the reason L4D2 was a little weird was because you use some software to make it 3D, so it might be better if the game is designed for it.

Yeah I could see how you could end up with problems in games.
I dont really know much about how 3d works but I would imagine that you've got to get two perspectives to line up right depending on what your looking at. And if thats the way it works then you would still be hard pressed to make a good game 3d even if it were designed for it as in a game your constantly changing what your really looking at whereas with TV your guided at whatever they want which means the 3d can be aligned specifically for the scene.

Sounds liek an awesome laptop. Always good to have good speakers hehe.

Re: New Laptop - HP ENVY 17 3D!

We'll see when Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out. That is supposedly being built with 3D in mind, and they're partnering with AMD, so my graphics card should be perfect for it. Most games that you can play in 3D so far are partnered with nvidia. I don't think that means you can only play in 3D with an nvidia card, but maybe that it works better.... I'm not really sure to be honest.
